Type 2 Diabetes has been found to affect health-related quality of life. A new dissertation shows that quality of life is often impaired even before the onset of the disease.
A new dissertation from the University of Eastern Finland found that prediabetes is associated with reduced quality of life. Impaired glucose tolerance, in particular, has a negative impact on quality of life.
The study utilized measures that considered how individuals valued different health states. The connection between individual risk factors, overall diabetes risk, and quality of life was also examined.
Why Does This Research Matter?
In addition to medication, lifestyle changes play a key role in diabetes management. Diabetes can be effectively prevented and treated through changes in diet, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors.
The new findings emphasize the benefits of lifestyle changes. This is crucial for the prevention of diabetes and its precursors.
Concrete research results now highlight the advantages of lifestyle changes and inspire confidence that altering eating and exercise habits is truly worthwhile! 🙂
Diabetes Is a Common Disease
Type 2 diabetes is a preventable and widespread public health issue. Approximately 400,000 Finns have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and an additional estimated 100,000 are unaware they have the disease. Among middle-aged Finns, about one-third have prediabetes or previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.
Prediabetes refers to elevated fasting blood glucose and impaired glucose tolerance, which are difficult to detect without blood glucose measurements and an oral glucose tolerance test, as these conditions rarely cause symptoms.
Factors that reduce quality of life include obesity and metabolic issues. The study showed that these factors, when combined, significantly impact quality of life even before the onset of diabetes.
The research suggests that addressing risk factors and overall diabetes risk could improve an individual’s quality of life.
How Can I Test My Health?
You can assess and test your health in many ways. Our most popular health assessment package, the Puhti Laboratory Package, provides comprehensive information about your body’s health. Puhti Laboratory Package includes several indicators of health status.
You can access the tests without a doctor’s referral, and the laboratory test itself takes just a few minutes. After the blood test, you’ll receive your results in a report that clearly shows whether your values are within the reference range.
If you need a doctor’s assistance after the tests (e.g., if you suspect an illness), you can book a phone consultation with a doctor directly from the results report!
