What is a body composition measurement?
A body composition measurement (InBody measurement) gives a precise report on the amounts of muscle, fat and water in your body. Healthy lifestyle, nutrition and regular exercise are the foundation of wellbeing, and their impact is visible directly in your body’s composition. Puhti’s body composition measurement gives a detailed picture of your status, helps you understand how your habits affect your body and monitor changes over time. You receive 56 values in the Puhti report.
A body composition measurement tells you:
- The amount of muscle mass and how it is distributed across body segments
- The amount of fat tissue and visceral fat (harmful internal fat)
- Bone health
- Body fluid distribution
- Your metabolic age
- A weight target
- An assessment of your nutritional status
- Your grip strength level
How is the body composition measurement done?
The measurement is performed with an InBody device. It uses bioimpedance (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, BIA), where a very small electrical current passes through your body via electrodes in the device. Different tissues conduct current differently: water conducts electricity well, while fat is an insulator.
During the measurement, you stand barefoot on the platform and hold the hand grips. The device measures electrical resistance (impedance) at multiple frequencies and estimates tissue composition in different parts of the body. The measurement itself takes less than a minute, and results are available immediately.
Body composition measurement supports wellbeing
Anyone interested in their health can benefit from the results. It is especially helpful for weight loss and people doing physical work, and it also helps monitor the effects of ageing. The measurement can help identify various risk factors related to lifestyle diseases. The data may indicate signs of diabetes risk or susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases.
A body composition measurement can help with:
- Weight management and lifestyle changes, to ensure you are heading in the right direction.
- Exercisers and athletes, to monitor program effects and identify asymmetries.
- Rehabilitation, to track recovery and functional capacity.
- Sedentary work, to assess risk factors such as internal (visceral) fat.
- Ageing, to monitor muscle mass, balance and health risks.
Do not do a body composition measurement if:
- You have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device.
- You have heart rhythm disorders and have not confirmed device compatibility with your doctor.
- You are ill, pregnant, or have a limb prosthesis.
- You have just trained and your body has not yet recovered.
Preparing for a body composition measurement
For best results, start preparing a couple of days in advance and keep measurement conditions the same every time. Good preparation makes your results comparable and as accurate as possible.
Minimum preparation requirements:
- Avoid eating and drinking for at least 2 hours before the measurement.
- Use the restroom; the bladder should be empty before the measurement.
- Wait a few minutes calmly before the measurement to let fluids settle after moving.
Optimal preparation:
- Avoid heavy exercise and ensure recovery 1–3 days before the measurement.
- Avoid alcohol for 2 days before the measurement.
- Do not make major dietary changes during the 2 days before measurement.
- The optimal time is in a morning fasted state after an overnight fast. You may drink a small glass of water.
Especially training, stress and supplements can affect fluid balance and your results. It is recommended to come to the measurement in as stable state as possible. Hydrate adequately in the days before, but avoid large amounts of fluids right before the measurement.
Pay attention to clothing, menstrual cycle and skin creams. The device automatically subtracts around 1 kg for clothing, so dress lightly. Avoid measuring during menstruation, as it may affect results. Do not use oily creams on soles or palms right before measuring, or wipe off the cream, to ensure reliable contact with the electrodes.
How to do the measurement at a self-service point
Puhti’s body measurement includes up to three measurements depending on the point: blood pressure, body composition and grip strength. Instructions are on the wall at the measurement point. Follow them and the order of measurements to ensure all results are saved correctly.
1. Before starting
First, check your personal ID number and background info shown on the device. Then:
- Remove outerwear and socks (electrodes also measure via the soles).
- Disinfect the device and the skin of your soles and palms with the provided wipes.
- Remove metal items such as watches and jewelry, which may interfere with accuracy.
2. Blood pressure measurement
Start with blood pressure. Sit upright and do not lean forward. Place your arm in the blood pressure monitor and find the correct elbow position that the device indicates with a blue light. Follow the device instructions. Accept the result on the body composition device screen.
3. Body composition measurement
Step onto the body composition device and follow the on-screen prompts. Do not step off when the measurement ends; proceed to grip strength.
4. Grip strength measurement
The device asks “Continue to grip strength test?” and guides you through. The grip strength device is on the wall. Stay on the body composition device for the entire grip strength test. When done, all measurements are complete. Disinfect the device afterwards.
5. Results in Oma Puhti
Your results will appear in the Oma Puhti service after your measurement visit.
Puhti’s body composition measurement delivers 50+ results in a clear report
Each measurement produces an easy-to-read Oma Puhti report, where every value is explained. The report includes illustrative charts and interpretation guidance, so you understand what the figures mean in practice. If any result suggests a health risk, the report will guide you to seek professional assessment when needed.
Overall score
InBody points are shown on a 1–100 scale. The score reflects body structure and “balance” in relation to target values. The more balanced your muscle and fat composition, the higher the score. Typical normal range is 70–90.
Muscle–fat diagnosis
A useful metric for tracking change. See total weight, muscle mass and fat mass in kilograms, and deviation from normal.
Body fat percentage
How much of your body weight is fat. Typical targets are 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women.
Visceral (internal) fat
Amount of internal fat in the abdominal area. This is a key health metric; elevated visceral fat is linked to diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Weight target
The device’s suggestion for changing weight, fat and muscle amounts. Ideal weight is based on the midpoint of the normal BMI range. Within 0–5 kg of ideal typically indicates normal weight.
Muscle balance
Describes lean mass across five body segments. Helps identify asymmetries and development needs, for example upper vs. lower body or right vs. left side differences.
Fluid balance
ECW/TBW ratio indicates extracellular water as a proportion of total body water. Deviations may suggest swelling or recovery challenges.
Waist–hip ratio
Waist circumference relative to hip circumference. A high value indicates central fat and higher disease risk.
Segmental circumferences
Estimates of circumferences (for example, neck, chest, abdomen, hips, arms, thighs).
Body composition breakdown
Describes weight components and how they are distributed: body water, protein, minerals, fat, soft tissue and fat-free mass.
Research parameters
Additional indicators like intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), basal metabolic rate, estimated energy needs, bone mineral mass, body cell mass and fat mass index (FMI).
Segmental fat diagnosis
Fat amounts in kilograms by body segment.
Nutritional status assessment
Indicates whether protein, minerals or fat amounts suggest undernutrition, normal levels or excess.
Body type
Describes body structure based on BMI and fat percentage; profiles help visualize the whole at different ages.
Calorie burn in exercise
Estimated energy expenditure in 30 minutes across various activities and daily movements, like walking or cleaning. Helps with dietary and exercise planning.
Phase angle
Indicates cell health and nutritional status. A low phase angle can reflect undernutrition or inflammation. Age, sex and body size affect the value.

Frequently asked questions about body measurement analysis
Visceral fat is harmful because it is metabolically active and releases substances directly into the bloodstream, which maintains low-grade inflammation and raises blood pressure. It accumulates especially in the liver, disrupts its function, predisposes to fatty liver, and impairs insulin action, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. The risk of cardiovascular diseases and various gastrointestinal problems also rises. The harm can be significant even in people with normal weight, so the amount is worth measuring and monitoring.
A common target is visceral fat under 100 cm² regardless of age and sex. In younger people, values are typically much lower, but the amount can increase with age and should still remain within the reference range. If the result is given as a level unit, the target is under level 10. You can obtain an accurate value reliably with a body composition measurement.
Visceral fat decreases at different rates depending on the individual, but with lifestyle changes, the first changes usually appear within 1–2 months. On average, for each kilogram of fat mass lost, the visceral fat area decreases by about 6.9 cm², provided energy deficit and exercise are maintained consistently. The pace is affected by baseline level, age, genetics, diet quality, amount of exercise, sleep, and stress.
Abdominal fat decreases best by combining a balanced diet with regular physical activity. The goal is to reduce total body fat, which also decreases visceral fat. In practice, this means a moderate energy deficit, aerobic exercise that fits your routine, and adequate strength training.
Internal organ fat (visceral fat) is fat that accumulates in the abdominal cavity and around, and partly within, internal organs. It normally accounts for about 10% of total body fat mass, but a large amount can accumulate even in people with normal weight. Excess internal organ fat is metabolically active and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver, among others. The amount is reliably measured with a body composition measurement.
Abdominal fat decreases best by combining a balanced diet with regular physical activity. The goal is to reduce total body fat, which also decreases visceral fat. In practice, this means a moderate energy deficit, aerobic exercise that fits your routine, and adequate strength training.
Weight can significantly affect fertility. Both underweight and overweight can disrupt hormone balance and make it harder to conceive. Overweight may also lead to insulin resistance, which is linked to ovulation disorders. A balanced weight supports hormone health and improves the chances of conception.
Calculate BMI by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared: BMI = weight ÷ height². Use kilograms and meters to get a correct result.
BMI is intended for adults over 18. For those over 65, BMI can be slightly above 25 without increased disease risk. In this age group, a normal BMI is about 23–29.
For adults, normal weight corresponds to BMI 18.5–25. For people over 65, a suitable range may be around 23–29. Overweight starts at 25 and obesity at 30.
No. BMI only reflects the ratio of weight to height and not fat distribution. A more reliable way to assess visceral fat is a body composition measurement. In such measurements, visceral fat is reported in cm² as an abdominal cross-section at navel level.
An individual is considered overweight when BMI is 25 or higher. Obesity begins when BMI exceeds 30. Overweight increases the risk of several health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Combine regular exercise with balanced nutrition. Do 2–3 full‑body strength sessions per week and add 2–3 endurance sessions. Avoid crash diets – losing weight too fast often reduces muscle instead of fat. A safe pace is about 0.5–1 kg per week, which reduces fat mass and better preserves muscle. Regular measurement helps you monitor progress.
Body fat percentage is useful, but reliability depends on method and conditions. You get comparable results when you prepare the same way each time. Remember that body fat percentage alone does not show where fat is located, so it is advisable to also track visceral fat and waist circumference. Regular, repeatable measurements show your trend best.
The most common method is bioimpedance (BIA), where a weak electrical current quickly and safely assesses body composition. Conditions such as hydration affect results, so measure under as similar conditions as possible each time. Skinfold mesurements are inexpensive but less accurate and depend on the measurer. DXA is very accurate and shows fat distribution, but it is more expensive and requires specialized equipment. For everyday tracking, BIA is the most practical – it’s used in Puhti’s body composition measurement.
Unlike BMI, universally accepted cut-offs for body fat percentage have not been established. Different measurement methods yield different results, and experts do not yet agree on universal thresholds. That’s why consistent tracking matters: measure with the same device and under similar conditions to ensure reliable comparison.
A good body fat percentage depends on age, sex, activity level and measurement method. Typical healthy values are about 21–36 % for adult women and 8–25 % for men. Athletes can be lower. The most important thing is to track your own development rather than aim for a single universal number.
Puhti is not responsible for the InBody app; it is provided by the device manufacturer. You can still transfer results from our devices to the app as follows:
- Keep your mobile device close enough so you can reach it without stepping off the device.
- Perform the measurement as usual.
- At the end, scan the QR code on the screen to send your results to the app. If you step off the device, the screen resets and the QR code disappears.
Puhti is not responsible for the app’s technology, development or compatibility, and does not guarantee that results will be available in the InBody app.
It shows how much fat, muscle and water your body contains and how they are distributed across body segments. The report includes key metrics such as visceral fat (fat around internal organs), a muscle–fat assessment, fluid balance and waist-to-hip ratio. It also highlights asymmetries and muscle balance to help you target training and daily changes. Results are presented clearly to make goal-setting and follow-up easy.
Yes. InBody measurement is reliable when performed according to instructions and repeated under similar conditions. The method is based on multi-frequency BIA used widely in healthcare, and the devices are medical devices.
InBody 770 is a medical device (MDD/93/42/EEC) that measures body composition accurately and quickly using a patented method.
- Measurement time is 60 seconds.
- Measurement frequencies 1, 5, 50, 250, 500, 1000 kHz allow assessment of different tissues.
- Wide operating range: weight 10–270 kg, height 95–220 cm, age 3–99 years.
In total, 30 impedance measurements are taken at six frequencies across these segments: right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg.
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measures electrical conductivity – the varying resistance alternating current encounters in different parts of the body. Different tissues respond differently to current. Body water conducts electricity very well, while fat acts like an insulator.
- Buy the measurement package from puhti.fi.
- Read the preparation instructions carefully.
- Go to the measurement point and open the door.
- Check on the measuring device that the ID and the mobile phone number are the same, i.e., DO NOT change the mobile phone number.
- Clean the equipment with cleaning wipes.
- Take off your socks and outerwear. The device will automatically deduct one kilogram from the measurement result.
- First, measure your blood pressure.
- Second, step on the device and follow its instructions.
- Finally, measure your hand grip strength.
- Step off the device, and the measurement will end automatically.
- Clean the equipment with cleaning wipes.
- See the results on your report. You will receive a text message notification when the results are ready.
If the grip strength meter is displaying pounds instead of kilograms, you can switch the unit as follows:
- Turn on the power of the grip strength meter.
- Squeeze the handle with half of your strength while, at the same time, briefly pressing the device’s power button (for about 1-2 seconds).
- This action will change the measurement unit from pounds to kilograms.

Vitamin B3 obtained from the diet is converted in our body into its active form, NAD biomolecules. A biomolecule is a molecule that is essential for the structure and function of living organisms. NADs (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides) are coenzymes that are essential for metabolism. NADs are found in every living cell. There are four different types of NAD: NAD+, NADH, NADP+, and NADPH.
Glutathione is a molecule that neutralizes harmful oxygen radicals produced as by-products of mitochondrial function in the cell. The level of glutathiones partly depends on the amount of harmful oxygen radicals, so glutathione levels indicate the body’s defense capability. Glutathiones belong to antioxidants, which are obtained, among other things, from the diet.
Through Puhti’s online store, you can order the NADMED measurement for yourself. After ordering, you will receive clear instructions for sample collection.
The NADMED measurement is significantly more efficient than other NAD measurements on the market, as NADMED can separate all four NAD forms from each other and measure their quantities accurately. Traditional NAD measurement methods are either expensive, slow, or inaccurate. The NADMED method offers a fast, accurate, and cost-effective way to measure all four NAD forms (NAD+, NADH, NADP+, NADPH) as well as glutathiones.
NAD+ Only – if you only want to know your NAD+ level. A low NAD+ level may be due to, for example, illness or inflammation.
NAD+/NADH – Provides information about your NAD+ and NADH levels and their ratio. These molecules are often measured together because they are oxidized and reduced forms of NAD, both of which are needed for healthy energy production. The NAD+/NADH ratio is a good indicator of mitochondrial and overall metabolic function.
NAD+/NADH + NADP+/NADPH – This test allows for the isolation and measurement of all four NADs. NADP+ and NADPH are phosphorylated forms of NAD and are particularly involved in anabolic reactions, such as the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol.
NAD+/NADH + NADP+/NADPH + GSH/GSSG – This test allows for the isolation and measurement of all four NADs and two glutathiones. Glutathione is an antioxidant that participates in preventing cell damage and maintaining resistance.
It is a blood test taken at Mehiläinen laboratories across Finland. The analysis of the NADMED method is done from whole blood.
No, you do not have to provide any background information. However, you can choose to note down medications, underlying conditions, such as diabetes, or questions and observations related to your energy levels, as this information can help understand possible variations in NAD levels.
The optimal sample amount is 150–200 microliters (μl), which is a very small amount. A microliter (μl) corresponds to 0.000001 liters, meaning 1 microliter is one millionth of a liter.
The NADMED test does not require fasting. You can eat and drink normally before sample collection. However, please avoid using caffeine and nicotine products before sample collection.
The results from the NADMED test are usually available within 10 business days after sample collection.
NAD levels are normalized by volume (final concentration is μM). The unit μM means micromoles per liter (micromole per liter). One micromole (μmol) is equal to one millionth of a mole, meaning 1 μM = 1 μmol/liter.

You can add new tests to your existing order. Order the tests as usual from the Puhti page; the sampler will see all the tests you ordered in the system. Puhti tests cannot be purchased from the laboratory register.
If you have placed a separate additional order and want to have all the tests taken at the same time, be sure to inform the laboratory. This does not apply to body composition measurements at the self-service point.
The order must always be filled in with the details of the person to be tested. If you want to order tests as a gift for someone else, gift cards are available. The gift card is used in Puhti’s online store, and the recipient of the gift can decide which test package they want to order.
If you need to change your booked testing appointment, please do so no later than the day before the appointment by contacting Mehiläinen’s customer service. Contact information and instructions: https://ajanvaraus.mehilainen.fi/help?language=en.
