What is immunoglobulin A (IgA)?
Immunoglobulins are proteins that function as antibodies, whose molecule consists of two heavy chains and two light chains. They are divided into groups based on the structure of the heavy chains: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM.
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is an antibody that plays a central role in the immune function of mucous membranes. It works especially in the digestive tract and respiratory system.
Immunoglobulin A attaches to microbes on the surfaces of mucous membranes and prevents their attachment to the cell. In the blood, it protects the body from viruses, bacteria, and fungi, although less effectively than the most common human antibody, immunoglobulin G.
Immunoglobulin A also has a role in allergic reactions.
When is the IgA level examined?
The IgA test can help doctors diagnose problems related to the immune system, intestines, liver, kidneys, and bone marrow. Individuals with a congenitally low IgA level or IgA deficiency have an increased risk of autoimmune diseases, infections, asthma, and allergies.
